Batweek: Batimation

In preparation of “Batweek”, I took some time out of my go-go gadget life to check out what I could of the latest direct-to-DVD animated Batman anthology “Batman: Gotham Knight.” If you haven’t heard, Gotham Knight is meant to set up the next Batman film much in the same vein as the Animatrix did awhile back. With the only element tying together these pieces being voice actor Kevin Conroy, (“Batman the Animated Series”) who dawns that infamous cowl this is very diverse collection of shorts. Unfortunately I was only able to find about 4 of the 6 shorts on the internet, being that I would never pay to rent this kind of thing, so I’ll share what I can.

Over the years the Batman mythology has proven itself to be a rich backdrop for slews of different stories and interpretations. On Gotham Knight we get 6 very different interpretations from six different writers including the talents of David S. Goyer (Batman Begins), Josh Olson (A History of Violence) Alan Burnett (Batman: Mask of the Phantasm) and others. Not all of them may hit the right notes, but every one of these pieces is still ambitious. With stories ranging from quick paced tech savvy field missions, to stories through civilian eyes, to stories reflecting the meaning of pain, Gotham Knight covers a lot of ground to show the complexity of this character.

If there was one thing your going to take in from the viewing experience, I’d say it’s the animation. Every segment here has been directed by a notable Japanese animator and every piece has there own style to set the mood. You have the kind of dough-eyed anime in Field Test, to a more basic approach in “Have I Got a Story For You” (which kind of looks like something Hayao Miyazaki would put together) to complexity of the Aeon Flux esque. “Deadshot”. Unfortunately I’d say this collection is actually more style than substance, but when they’re just animated shorts than that’s acceptable.

So should a Batman fan check this out before the new flick? Maybe if by reading about my mild reaction you got intrigued, otherwise this is just kind of a so-so artsy experiment. I like seeing Kevin Conroy taking on the voice again, and some of the stories here spark some interest but overall you should probably only watch this if you feel like killing some major time, see you around fellow Bat-fanatics

Re-Animator

Wednesdays are often considered the mid-week slump here at Cat Fancy. Too early to review new albums and too late to recall events of the previous weekend, so it’s mostly a dumping ground for lame posts, but nonetheless I’ll give it a shot with a post about the controversial subject of Hollywood “Remakes”. A word that probably sends shivers down most people’s spines, I bring up this topic after recently viewing the trailer of the upcoming The Day Earth Stood Still remake at Hancock. I find this a confusing choice for a remake, as I always thought of that classic sci-fi flick as a perfect representation of that era. What kind of impact would that story make today? Aside from the tone and themes of the original what can they really bring to the table? I assume they’ll put in more special effects sequences and action, which would be unfaithful as the original isn’t an action movie. Sure the special effects may seem dated but they have their own kind of vintage charm. With this on my mind, I thought I’d discuss a few upcoming films that I think are appropriate for remakes and some that are train wrecks waiting to happen. Now obviously at this stage there’s no way to know if any of these will be good, or bad, but I can still give my thoughts on whether or not these films are justified to be remade. I’ve done some research to the best of my ability on what’s coming out, so I’ll try and cover what I can.

Good Idea
The Wolf Man (2009) – Yeah it’s a classic but when’s the last time you can recall even seeing a werewolf movie? Dracula and Frankenstein have been done to death, but old Wolfie’s never really tested remake waters and I think he has potential. Not only that but have you heard about the cast to this flick? Anthony Hopkins, Hugo Weaving, Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro donning the lead role of the doomed Lawrence Talbot? Pretty good casting, and it seems to me that the film’s director Joe Johnston ( Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Hidalgo, October Sky) has a good enough track record…. I’m pumped!

The Creature from the Black Lagoon (2009) – Some might say “Hey the Creature is a classic Universal monster, leave him be.” well as iconic a monster as he may be, Jack Arnold’s 1954 flick The Creature from the Black Lagoon is probably the worst Universal Monster movie. Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man, The Mummy… Those are all well crafted and well acted movies, but the Creature was just another 50s B-Movie. Probably the only reason he’s even memorable was the excellent costume created for the monster (Really the only true highlight of the film). Aside from that all we got was some poor acting and weak storytelling so a remake might be a nice idea, especially with the talented screenwriter Gary Ross (Big, Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) penning the script.

Fahrenheit 451 (2010) – François Truffaut directed the original adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s classic sci-fi novel which though ambitious, was kind of a mess. With a mostly foreign cast attempting to speak English, this film wasn’t terrible or anything but the story truly deserves a better adaptation. Frank Darabont ( The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption) has signed on to write and direct this one and with his skills this could prove to be quite a neat adaptation of a classic novel.

Robocop (2010) – I’ve never been a fan of the original series but I still think Robocop’s a pretty neat character. To see him up on the big screen could be a blast… Sure it could be absolutely terrible but it’s an appropriate choice. A remake could be a nice chance to vamp up the effects and thought sounds swell to me.

Bad Idea
Death Race (2008) – You may have seen the trailers recently for this upcoming Jason Statham action movie. What some may not know, is that this is actually a remake of the 1975 Roger Corman produced film Death Race 2000 starring David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone. The key difference here is that Corman version was actually a very light and silly action film while this looks to be another generic cash in. Doing a remake of a movie that never had anything good going for it (except the main character’s name “Frankenstein’) in the first place is puzzling. Not only that but the original had the laid back coolness of David Carradine and Sly what does this have goin for it… The guy who directed Mortal Kombat?

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2009) – I think I made my point earlier but adding on to that Keanu Reeves as Klaatu? Michael Rennie owned that role I’m not sure whether Keanu has the chops.

Friday the 13th (2009) – What are they gonna do, Jason Voorhees wasn’t the killer in the first movie, so who want’s to see a movie if they already know the twist? I guess they’ll have to change it and make it even stupider.

The Birds (2009) – So they’re gonna try and one up the master of suspense? Good luck, The Birds was a classic, beautifully photographed suspense thriller what more could you want?

Escape From New York (TBA) – John Carpenter has basically become a whore these days, as he’ll pretty much let anyone remake any of his films. In the past couple of years we’ve seen remakes of Carpenter’s films; The Fog, Assault on Precinct 13 and Halloweenand you know what? So far they’ve all been terrible so why keep trying? (especially with this cult flick.) Now what’s probably the only thing that made the original as memorable as it is? Ahem how about Mr. Snake Plissken himself Kurt Russel? You might as well make an Indiana Jones movie without Harrison Ford in the title role. I’m getting mighty sick of post-apcolyptic films about the future and this is absolutely pointless.

Red Dawn (TBA) – A remake of a film dealing with the cold war? Hmm, what kind of impact or message could that have today?… How about none, seriously what a joke.

Addendum

Remember that the masters for Who’s Next had gone missing, so that album release was in danger? Well some news on that front has just arrived, and it sounds good.

No, they didn’t find the masters. Instead, they went to Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey to create a best-of pack for the game. The result is a 12 song set that will be released for Rock Band July 15th (2 weeks from now). These are the songs:

  • Amazing Journey
  • Baba O’Riley
  • Behind Blue Eyes
  • Eminence Front
  • Going Mobile
  • Leaving Here
  • My Generation (LIVE)
  • Real Good Looking Boy
  • Sea & Sand
  • Summertime Blues (LIVE)
  • Who Are You
  • Young Man Blues (LIVE)

Sure, there’s room to complain here. For example, how did “Baba O’Riley” survive and “Bargain” not? But overall, this seems like a pretty fun package of songs. At least we get all the CSI opening themes. This is probably what we’re getting instead of an album for July, and I feel it’s a pretty good solution to the Who’s Next problem.

The Heart of Rock & Roll is Still Beating

The long-awaited announcement of Rock Band 2 just came today, and it sounds like everything we hoped for. The most important piece of news is that all Rock Band (1) DLC will work with the new game, and new DLC will work with both games. They also say there will be a new way to play the old DLC too, whatever that means. This is some fairly innovative technology, people.

The most surprising announcement was that Rock Band 2 will be released earlier on XBox 360 than on PS3 and the other consoles. They said that the 360 version will hit in September, around the release of Guitar Hero 4, and the rest before the end of the year. Thank God I’ve got the 360 game.

They also said there will be a new package for new players and those who have destroyed their instruments, with quieter, more realistic and more reliable instruments. I’m sure that would be nice, but I’ve already got what I need.

As far as innovation, Harmonix is waiting until E3 to reveal any other information. World Tour will be imporved, specifically random setlists, but they haven’t said much else. They also talked about improvements to gameplay for people who want to sing and play guitar. But we’ll have to wait a couple weeks for much else.

No artists have been revealed, but AC/DC was heavily hinted at. In an IGN article, it was announced that from this list, one or more of these bands will be in the game:

  • Agent Orange
  • The Beatles
  • Built to Spill
  • The Buzzcocks
  • Journey
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Modest Mouse
  • Pavement
  • The Replacements
  • Tool

Exciting times!

Well I guess the most anticipated albums (at least for me and my chums) have already come out, but as I was surfing around the web after returning from my vacation I noticed “You know there’s still some intriguing stuff coming our way.” That is at least for me. One I’m actually pretty curious about (which I don’t think most would expect) is Beck’s upcoming album Modern Guilt to be released on July 8th and produced by Danger Mouse. I’ve been off and on with my opinions of Beck, I haven’t heard to much aside from his singles, but I do enjoy Odelay so that must be something. Anyways, it would appear that Beck is trying out a new more trippy kind of sound at least on his new single “Chemtrails” which kind of sounds like The Flaming Lips. Beck will as well be collaborating with Indie singer/songwriter Cat Power on a few tracks, so we’ll see where that takes us.

I wanted to mention a release (which I don’t think anyone will actually want to buy or listen to) but nonetheless I find to be an interesting tidbit, is the new album from what used to be The Darkness. If you remember not long after The Darkness’ second album, lead singer and front man Justin Hawkins was kicked out of the group while the remaining members decided to start a new band. This new band (Lead by most recent bassist Richie Edwards) have now reformed to become the “Stone Gods” So do they sound like The Darkness you may ask? Well unfortunately no, they pretty much suck. What used to be a silly but fun tribute to Hair Metal has now just become a bad joke. With a handful of incredibly generic Metal/Blues Rock tunes I couldn’t care less about Stone Gods (If you miss The Darkness then I’d say you’re better off waiting for Justin Hawkins upcoming solo album) I just wanted to point this out, i really don’t care so I wont even say when it’s released.. Sometime in July.

July 22 will mark a day for two releases, the latest album from inventive Indie Pop rockers Dr. Dog entitled “Fate” and Australian Garage Rock band The Vines 4th studio album “Melodia” Judging from Dr. Dog’s latest single “The Old Days” it would appear that there up to there same old bouncy retro sounding pop music again, which should be a nice midsummer treat. As for The Vines I’m not really sure what to think based off their leading single, the one minute and fifty-seven second tune “He’s a Rocker”. I don’t know why The Vines have become so obsessed with writing such short songs these days, but if anything Melodia could still manage to be a simple and fun 34 minutes of head-banging rock. I’d like to see them get back to their more psychedelic and experimental sounds that were present on Highly Evolved and Winning Days but what are you gonna do?

By the way you can probably expect me to do a “Retrospecticus” of The Vines at some point in time this July I’ve been thinking about it. So long for now C.F. enthusiasts.

Rock Bandits

The title’s stupid, ignore it. It’s that time of the… couple of months… again. That’s right, it’s time to discuss Rock Band and the music that we all love to play.

We got some boring music this week, most interestingly some Offspring song. But the big news is that we’ll be getting more than The Pixies’ Doolittle next week, we’ll also get a 3-pack from Weezer’s Red Album. Those tracks are “Dreamin’,” “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived,” and “Troublemaker.” “Troublemaker” is like perfect for Rock Band, and “TGMTEL” should be a total trip. It’s a shame we got “Dreamin'” over “Pork and Beans.” Look’s like an expensive week!

Now for an update on some of the rumored tracks. It sounds like Who’s Next is stuck in limbo, due to missing masters, wuh-oh! A list from OXM hinted that we would be getting more from Sabbath, Maiden and Metallica as well as Bad Company and The Haunted. Three Greatful Dead songs, “Touch of Grey,” “Alabama Getaway” and “Uncle John’s Band” are supposed to show up at some point.

Several bands have hinted that they have Rock Band tracks coming. Who? The B-52s, Bad Religion, Devo, as well as some other jerks. Offspring says these songs are coming “Come Out And Play [Keep ‘Em Separated],” “Self Esteem,” “Gone Away,” “All I Want,” “Pretty Fly (For A White Guy),” and “The Kids Aren‘t Alright.” Also, the song “USS Zydecoldsmobile” by Jimmy Buffet was played in Rock Band at one of his concerts.

MTV2 messed up an released a list of potential songs, including “Aesthetics of Hate” by Machine Head, “Burn” by Nine Inch Nails and “Breed” by Nirvana. Supposedly another Rush pack, or perhaps an album, is in the works.

These are just some of the many rumors sorrounding future DLC for Rock Band. As you can see, we have a lot to look forward to. Making Guitar Hero World Tour that much more difficult a sell. Which is too bad, cause they are doing some really interesting things. You might want to read this article. Most interesting part? “Everlong” by Foo Fighters and “Rebel Yell” by Billy Idol.
