Keen for Keane

For whoever may be interested, English Pop trio Keane have released the first single off of their upcoming album “Perfect Symmetry” available to download for free off their official site. The song titled “Spiralling” is definitely a different sound for this keyboard driven Pop/Rock group, being a fan myself I initially had mixed thoughts about the song perhaps sounding too mainstream, but it’s starting to grow on me. Utlizing a more upbeat “groove based” kind of synth rock, this latest song kind of reminds of an 80s pop song. The drums are that kind of heavy snare sound that beckons back to the age of Prince and British New Wave while the synths are bright and plentiful. I’m not sure if this song will attract any new Keane fans, but for the most part it’s a simple and fun pop song from a band that never seems to run out of ideas despite having no guitars.

Cats Maul Rockers

Sorry to dissapoint anyone who passed upon this page noticing there to be no T3 this week, (which I’m sure is no one) but the Cat Fancy staff has been very busy and somewhat physically/mentally drained since our big duel victories over “The Rockers” softball team. Winning both games (one 14-8 and the other 10-9) I think we’ve all earned ourselves a little leisure time for proving to be only the second worst team in Kirkland Softball league.

On another high note production on the Cat Fancy pilot “Seperated at Girth” (about the Cat Fancy crew’s daily misadventures) recently began production, and I’m sure you can expect that to appear on the web sometime this August. Aside from that not much is going on for the next couple days and maybe even following week, as Mr. Lemme will be out of town, but he’ll still be here in spirit. As for myself, I recently picked up a copy of the BBC comedy Spaced via Amazon.com and very much enjoy the pop culture quirkiness of the series. In the world of movies, I was thinking about going to go see Swing Vote this weekend to get my Kevin Costner fix and in as for music, Dhani Harrison’s, the son of the late George Harrison, and his band “thewnewno2”, also featuring drummer/keyboardist Oliver Hecks will be available on iTunes tomorrow, so I think I might buy that for a larf… Still looking for a way to buy the new Vines album for less than 16.99 online as well so maybe I can find a way to resolve that. Anyhow, thanks for reading and you can expect us to keep you more frequently updated umm… Soon I guess, Otteni out.

P.S. Happy birthday Kevin, when I grow up I want to be just like him.

RE3

It’s been more than a week since a talked about E3 at Sean Lemme.com, and even more than a week since the show ended. Despite being pretty disappointing, I’ll still relive last week to help you find the diamonds in the rough.

So on Tuesday Sony and Nintendo had their press conferences. Sony didn’t announce anything that unexpected, save for M.A.G. (Massive Action Game). It sounds kind of interesting, but I need to hear more on the execution there. Overall a fine show, albeit a somewhat boring one.

Nintendo, on the other hand, fucked up. The Wii Motion Plus thing, which I guess adds 1:1 motion to the WiiMote, but where were the games? All we got was the new Wii Sports, which doesn’t look like they are trying very hard. The only real games they announced were the DS GTA (which they revealed nothing about) and the new Animal Crossing, which looks identical to the Gamecube game, except it has a city now. Bullshit! The other announcements were Wii Music, which looks like something for toddlers.

Press Conference Scorecard:
Microsoft: B
Sony: B-
Nintendo: F

The only other press conference worth noting was the EA one, which was a glorified parade of all their great game developers. Can’t wait for Spore, Mirror’s Edge, Rock Band 2, all that stuff.

I can’t really say any new games caught my eye, but I did enjoy getting a better look at some titles that we didn’t know too much about. The new Prince of Persia looks great, but maybe I’m biased towards games that use Sigur Ros music in the trailer. If I had a PS3 I’d be stoked about Resistance 2 and Killzone 2. Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, Resident Evil 5, all that shit looks great.

Guitar Hero World Tour just doesn’t impress me. They have a couple sweet songs announced so far, but the interface itself, along with the note charts, just doesn’t look good. I get the feeling that Rock Band 2 is a perfecting of RB1, while Guitar Hero 4 is just Neversoft trying to catch up and pander to the fans.

Ultimately, there’s not that much that I can report to you. The best thing to do is go to a site like GameTrailers or Kotaku and dig in.

The Show Must Go On

“At the Movies with Lyons and Mankiewicz” that title certainly would need some work. Sifting through the daily IMDb news I found a post that I thought would be an appropriate followup to Sean’s “The Balcony is Closed”. As you’ve already heard, Ebert and Roeper have left the show “At the Movies”, but quick to act Disney has already replaced the esteemed film critics with E! Channel critic Ben Lyons and radio personality/Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz. Plans are to makeover the show with new segments and a new image but still remain a review show.

Hmm E! Entertainment huh… Well I don’t mean to judge a book by it’s cover but considering the pretty boy image of Ben Lyons and the former position he held? One thing is for sure is it’s gonna be hard for me to be won over. I’ll stilll give it a shot but never hearing of these two guys makes me a little iffy. I can only hope this new duo can pull off a genuine chemistry to keep me watching.

The Balcony is Closed

Bad news guys: Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper are leaving the show that is currently known as “At the Movies with Ebert & Roeper.”

Apparently while renegotiating Roeper’s contract, Disney decided they were going to change the shows format, despite that format being the main reason the show is successful. So Roeper decided to not renew his contract and go on to start his own show, a spiritual successor to the show Gene Siskel and Ebert began more than 30 years ago.

Ebert soon announced that he too would be leaving the show. Since he can’t talk right now, I’m guessing that means we won’t be seeing him on TV again. A damn shame.

We here at Cat Fancy are big fans of the “At the Movies” as it is right now, and will continue to watch it through August, Roeper’s last month on the show. After that? Who knows. At the end of all things, we’d all just like to salute Ebert, Siskel, Roeper, A.O. Scott, Michael Phillips, Robert Wolansky, and all the others that made the show so enjoyable over the years.

The Final Frontier

With the release of the brooding, dark blockbuster epic The Dark Knight this weekend I think it’s safe to say that everyone could use a little cheering up and here’s one solution. Now for anyone that’s a fan of Simon Pegg and his frequent collaborators Nick Frost and Writer/Director Edgar Wright, then perhaps you’ve heard of the tv show Spaced, If you haven’t then let me briefly fill you in.

Before achieving wordlwide popularity with comedy films like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, these three comic minds all worked on the short lived British series Spaced (1999-2001). Combining overblown cookiness, along with Hollywood cliches and surrealism to portray the seemingly dull lives of two British flatmates (Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes) this short lived series quickly established a strong cult following. With a cast of off the wall characters such as Pegg’s upbeat flatmate Daisy (Jessica Hynes) and military obsessed best friend (Nick Frost) this show established a fine starting off point for this styling of British comedy. It’s been unavailable in the U.S. for awhile now but it’s finally coming this summer. For the first time, all 14 episodes of Spaced are being released on DVD on of July 22, 2008.

I myself have only seen the pilot online, which I did very much enjoy, but this is the day I’ve been waiting for. Finally a chance to properly view the series that started it all. After all, I do consider myself a pretty big Pegg fan, I even saw Run Fatboy Run and I enjoyed it, Otteni out.

Batweek Conclusion

It’s been a hell of a week leading up to the most anticipated movie of 2008, and boy it was worth it. I’ve never spent so much time away from Wookiepedia for such an extended period of time. Instead I was over at Batman Wiki, trying to soak up as much Batman knowledge as I could in preparation. Reading the guys’ lists and posts was great and not being as much of a comic book guy myself I really enjoyed learning all the stories and Remy nightmares. Who knows what they’ll do next, because the more and more I think about it, the more I don’t want another Batman for a while. I really felt that there was enough material in The Dark Night for about 3 movies, and with Heath Ledger gone, I just feel like I don’t want anymore. Hopefully they’ll start production on WombatMan. I think the Dentist needs a little more character development though. All we can do is pray.

So while we wait and debate about what is coming next, I’ll leave you with this:
