Dumberer and Dumberer

Today AJ and I got together to brainstorm ideas as we occasionally do and I guess this is what we came up with. We’d been getting pretty bored from an hour or so of playing sega genesis games when we decided we’d surf the web. Logged on as Paul on facebook, our attention was suddenly drawn to one of his friends. There was just something about this guy’s hilarious misspelled and somewhat simpleminded comments that suddenly inspired us.

So we decided to change up the kid’s name a little and then make a slideshow based off of his actual facebook updates. I am not lying when I say at least 80% of what we say in this video was actually said by this kid verbatim…. And that’s basically what AJ, Paul and myself did all day and it was good fun. I’d be surprised if anyone aside from us three found it to be that funny (It’s purposefully done in an amateur styling) but hopefully it will amuse someone. If you don’t like “Richard Fatbert humor” this may not be your bag. Anyhow, I have no regrets about making this and uploading it to the internet.

P.S. “Brian Hjort” is actually the name of one of this guy’s friends…. I have no idea how to pronounce it. The title of this post is a reference to our “Film Talk” video.

Welcome to Da Morgue.org

It finally happened, the real Cat Fancy magazine made the totally reasonable request that we stop using their name. So we wanted to move to Morgue.org, but that’s taken. So instead I moved us to Da Morgue.org.

Hopefully this will be the greatest thing ever to happen.

I’ll start working on a new banner and stuff immediately. You better buckle up, because we’re in for a wild ride.

Death Cab In Concert

I’m having hard time feeling motivated to do CAT’s anymore so I don’t think I’ll be doing them as frequently anymore. I’m sure I might do one everyone once in a while, like for an album that’s relevant to whatever’s happening during a certain week. But for now I thought I’d reflect on a concert I attended with fellow Cat Fancy members John Otteni and Matt Carstens about three days ago, Death Cab for Cutie with opening acts New Pornographers and Ra Ra Riot.

The concert was held at Marymoor Park in Redmond, which was pretty cool. It seems like every concert I’ve been to I’ve had to devote a large chunk of my day before hand just getting to the concert. But with this one I was able to get off of work two hours before the concert, then meet up with John and Nancy and arrive at Marymoor with plenty of time to spare. Luckily, we were even able to get a spot right near the stage to view the concert.
First Act: Ra Ra Riot

I’ve been a fan of Ra Ra Riot after hearing their debut album that was released last year, so I was really looking forward to seeing them live. They have a great live energy, and seeing them live really added to my apprectiation of their music. I really loved seeing how the cellist, violinist, and guitarist are all doing this very different things melodically and yet it all fits together so perfectly. The only real complaint I had was that it felt like their set wasn’t that long, but looking back on it, it looks like they played pretty much all the songs from their only album, so I guess that’s not even worth complaining about, especially for an opening act. I’d definitely like to see them again sometime in the near future.
Second Act: The New Pornographers

I’ve never really gotten into the New Pornographers despite Matt’s infatuation with them, but I’ve still always enjoyed their music, just not enough to listen to any of their albums. I had remembered seeing pictures of them before and remembering them seeming pretty old as far as the age of their band members. Then they walked out onstage and my memory served me correct, most of them looked like they were around forty, except the base player looked like he had to be at least 50 years old.
Their set was good, pretty much what I expected though. According to Matt their set list was a pretty random collection of their songs, although he seemed to enjoy their set nonetheless. However, Matt was still pissed Niko Case wasn’t performing with them, which I can understand, although I wasn’t expecting her to be there. Before the concert he said seeing The New Pornographers live was going to be the pinnacle of his life, or something like that, so I’m glad I was able to make that happen for him.
Headliners: Death Cab For Cutie

About a half hour or so after New Pornographers, Death Cab For Cutie took the stage, launching into “The Employment Pages”, “Your Heart Is An Empty Room”, and “The New Year”. So from the beginning the set consisted of songs from throughout Death Cab’s discography. I think they only played about five songs from their newest album, and just one from their recently-released Open Door EP. I kind of wish I had listened to more of Death Cab’s early stuff before the concert, because they certainly played a lot of it, and I haven’t really listened to anything before Transatlanticism.
Though Death Cab isn’t really the kind of band that usually rock’s that hard, they were still an enjoyable act to watch. Singer Ben Gibbard and guitarist Chris Walla had a nice dynamic going as they would trade of on lead and rhythm guitar duties as well as keyboard duty. Probably the most memorable song was the extended version of “I Will Possess Your Heart”, it was pretty cool to see Death Cab jam off of the first part of the song live.
So all in all it was a damn fine concert, it was the first time I’ve seen more than two acts on a bill, and the fact that both opening acts as well as the headliners were great just made an overall memorable concert. It seems I have a hard time seeing more than one concert a year, and if this ends up being the only one I see until next summer, I guess I’d be alright with it, because it was definitely one of the better ones I’ve seen.

All Star Game Recap

Just to spite Colin I’m going to try my best to get back in the habit of posting bi-yearly.

First off, what a game. With the pitching and defense dominating providing for a quick pace I seriously had to pinch myself and make myself realize I wasn’t watching a Mariners game. That was some of the most exciting, edge of my seat all star game I have ever seen. Here are some of my thoughts throughout the game.

  • I’m a sucker for all of the pagentry. I love when they announce the players and the managers. It was so cool to see Ozzie Smith and Bob Gipson, two of my favorite HOF’ers, and especially Stan ‘The Man’ Musial give the ball to Obama. While by his own admission, Obama has a pretty weak arm and you can tell he had never played organized baseball, but I hella respect him going with his White Sox Jacket. If only Bush had worn a Texas jacket throwing out the first pitch in NY after 9/11. I guess that was a little different situation.
  • My heart is always pounding when a Mariner is making their appearance in an All Star game because I know in the back of my mind that their opportunities are limited. Thankfully Ichiro got his hit out of the gate and Felix threw a brilliant scoreless inning and we didn’t have to go through that Putz debacle of a few years back.
  • I LOATHE Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. The only reason Joe Buck is in a radio booth is because his dad is Jack Buck and he’s got a nice voice. He’s often distracted and has little tangible enthusiasm. Tim McCarver on the other hand is even worse. He should be in a home rather than being paid to be heard aloud for humans to hear. He says the most obvioius things like, “This switch hitter hit a home run from both sides on Sunday. That means he hit one batting right handed AND left handed.” No shit. The thing that really pissed me off is when Felix came into pitch they did not even mention his name until there was two outs. It’s like what the hell! Stop talking about how great a guy Ryan Howard is and focus on the game! He’s not even up yet!
  • People will probably say that Albert Pujol’s All Star performance was disapointing. I beg to differ. He made some plays at first that I’ve never seen made. He is one hell of a first basemen. Sure he made an error but that guy was standing right in front of him. I knew he was good but his defensive play tonight solidified that he is the best player in the Major Leagues in all facets of the game right now.
  • Speaking of defense, Carl Crawford is a beast. A natural center fielder, I had little doubt that once he jumped he had it. Once Hamilton was out of the game, I felt like Joe Maddon knew what kind of game was going to be played with the caliber of pitching on the mound. He ran out Carl Crawford, Curtis Granderson, and Adam Jones. Thats basically the Mariners outfield in terms of defensive ability. Its a new approach dubbed the “3 CF” approach and catches like Crawfords hopefully solidify what people like Adam Dunn shouldn’t be able to own a baseball glove, let alone play the OF.
  • I love Curtis Granderson. Ever since my failed attempt to play fantasy baseball, I’ve always followed his career and really admired the way he plays. He is a triple hitting machine and let out as loud of a little ‘woo’ as I could tonight when he hit that triple.
  • If I was an Indian’s fan I would be SO pissed. I understand Charlie Manuel’s got a pretty good shot to get back to the World Series and he was managing the game to win, but still. I would be so mad that my only representative in the game got intentionally walked.
  • I’m pretty much over the whole Adam Jones situation to the point where I really like just rooting for him. I’m glad he got the winning sac fly and wish him the very best. Besides we got GOOT!
  • I’m glad Heath Bell got the loss because he is a hated rival Padre and a big fat douche bag.

All in all it was a very exciting game and for as long as I live I’ll never get used to one run games. So exhilarating every time. I’m sure Comish Selig was relieved to go from that 4 hour and 50 minute debacle to a 2 hour and 30 minute thriller. Here’s to keeping the streak alive!

The Boy Ain’t Right

Hey check this out, Paul made this abstract yet somehow amusing test video. I believe he edited in premiere and used After Effects to pull off of the visual FX. Makes me want to utilize some more effects in a future Cat Fancy production. Anyhow I hope you enjoy it, I did.

R.I.P. Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

1958-2009
I’m sure everyone’s already heard about the sudden death of Michael Jackson, but I’m still pretty shocked about this abrupt end to an unprecedented career.  I don’t think anyone saw this one coming seeing as though I had just recently read about his attempts to make a comeback with his planned series of concerts at London’s O2 arena.

According to reports, Jackson collapsed in his Los Angeles home and paramedics arriving on the scene found him with no pulse and immediately rushed Jackson to the hospital. He was then confirmed dead at the age of 50 at 3:30 PM on Thursday.  Jackson’s health has always been a source of speculation and he had recently postponed some of his upcoming London shows due to health issues, but I don’t think anyone had any idea that he was in such poor condition.
Michael Jackson’s influence on popular music as well as pop culture is monumental, he was easily the biggest artist of the 1980’s and was pretty much the Elvis Presley or Frank Sinatra of his time.  He first made a splash as the lead singer of The Jackson Five before breaking out on his own with the classic 1979 album, Off The Wall.  It was three years later that he released Thriller, an album that still stands as the best selling album of all-time.  Of course it wasn’t just his music that made him an icon, he had an unmistakeable fashion style, created a slew of famous dance moves, and was one of the first pioneers of the music video.
Unfortunately my generation is probably most familiar with his outlandish personal life, filled with scandal as well as bizarre publicity stunts.  He’d also been facing financial troubles in recent years, being millions of dollars in debt.  However, despite having one of the most bizarre personal lives of any famous entertainer, I don’t think there’s any denying Jackson’s status as one of the biggest musical artists of the 20th century.
