Halfway To Heaven

We’re already pretty deep into Spring, and summer vacation is only about a month away, well at least for Sean and I. I figured I’d take a gander at what looks to be some promising music that’ll be coming out between now and then. Most of it’s on the indie side of things, but apparently that’s pretty much all I listen to now as far as new music.
I confided to Sean a while ago that The Hold Steady are my favorite modern band, so as you might expect I’ve got a fair amount of anticipation towards their new album Heaven Is Whenever, which comes out May 4. Another band releasing an album that day is Broken Social Scene, who I’ve been listening to lately mostly because they’re playing Sasquatch the day I’ll be there. May 4 will also see the release of Together, the newest offering from The New Pornographers, a band Nancy loves so much that after seeing them live, he no longer feels the need to ever go to another concert again.
May 11 will see the release of High Violet by The National, another great band who’ll be playing Sasquatch the same day me, Sean, and John will be there. I think the Dead Weather have a new album also coming out that week, but I’m sure we can all agree on a resounding “meh” in reaction to that.
May 18 will see the release of new albums by Band of Horses and LCD Soundsystem, two bands I’ve been starting to get into lately but unfortunately won’t be seeing at Sasquatch. Beyond that there doesn’t seem to be too much to look forward to as far as Summer releases. Maybe Coldplay or Radiohead will have an album out by the end of the year, that’d be cool.

Conan Takes Back Showtime

By now I’m sure everyone’s heard that Conan O’Brien will be returning to television on TBS this November. As George Lopez’s lead-in. I mean, I would be happier, but did anyone really not expect Conan to be back on TV by the end of the year? He was just supposed to land a pioneering new show on Fox or innovate synergy or something. TBS?

I hoped he would somehow end up on Comedy Central. We already saw what great rapport he has with Colbert and Stewart during the writer’s strike, and then I would hardly ever have to change the channel. But I guess that would probably have Conan doing a show at midnight again, which we know he hates. And it’s not like Comedy Central would tell its most popular dudes to move for another potentially more popular host. Comedy Central knows better than to pull an NBC.

Instead Conan will be another entry in the crowded 11 p.m. field. Hopefully he can find an audience and make this work. But this certainly isn’t ideal.

Drop a Dookie

Continuing me trend of not really following Rock Band enough, I guess the final track list for Green Day: Rock Band is out. As they promised, the six songs from the last album that are already out as Rock Band DLC are playable in this game.

What is interesting is that Harmonix has no plans to release additional tracks for the game. I guess they feel like they’ve addressed everything the band has to offer. What do you think? Personally, this reinforces my belief that this is a game that probably should not have been made. So, are vocal harmonies and these tracks enough to justify your $60 this June?

Did You Know Jimi Rocked?

It was a big deal a couple years ago when Activision locked up Jimi Hendrix for the Guitar Hero games. But that sucked and I guess the Hendrix family agreed, because The Experience’s second album, Axis: Bold as Love, has been available for download in Rock Band since last week.

Did you know this? Do you still stay up-to-date with DLC announcements and still play the game regularly? I know I don’t. Every once in a while I check out what’s available, but I don’t buy new content as frequently as I used to. And all the while I’m getting worse at the game.

This is sad. You see, when Rock Band 2 came out, what I liked about it was that it could sustain itself as a platform. At the time, I thought it was pretty much as good as a rhythm game could get, and I was happy to see Harmonix wanted to keep the game as a platform for new musical releases, instead of perpetually putting out new games, like Guitar Hero. That’s why I’ve been so resistant to games like Lego Rock Band and especially Green Day: Rock Band. I like having everything in its right place, which is to say in one game.

But after a couple years, it seems like Harmonix will have to put out a new game to get me playing like I used to. The Beatles: Rock Band was a lot of fun for a while, but I’m talking about a Rock Band 3. And they seem to understand that, as there have been hints of the game coming out this year. All we really know is that it probably supports vocal harmonies. It’s just kind of a shame even something as exciting as Rock Band Network isn’t enough.

Da Morgue Dot Org 2.0

Well, after a couple weeks of not so much posting. I thought I’d step up and get the ball rolling. And there’s no better way to do that than be redesigning the site. I think this new look is really bold, introducing the festivity we generate wherever we go while maintaining professionalism.

I expect to keep this design for a long time, as I obviously spent hours working on it over the past few weeks. So get used to it.

The Balcony is Closed… Again

“RIP At the Movies” beloved critic Roger Ebert tweeted yesterday. For the long-running series has been cancelled, with the last episode to air August 14 this year.

You may remember when I posted a similar post a couple years ago, about Roeper and Ebert leaving the show. We thought for sure that was the end for the series. And it seemed that way too, with sellouts “The Bens” taking over hosting duties, the legendary critical forum took a lengthy hiatus from quality conversation in favor of gimmicky garbage.

But things were looking up when actually knowledgeable critics Michael Phillips and A.O. Scott wrestled the reigns away from those morons. The show returned to its original form, sure there were no thumbs, and Phillips and Scott were no Ebert and Siskel, or even Roeper, but it gave us something to watch. Now we must cherish it for the few months it’s left.

There are many concerns that come with this cancellation. What will happen to AtTheMoviesTV.com? Sure, maybe a weekly review show cannot compete with the likes of Rotten Tomatoes, but that web archive deserves to exist. When the show does end, we’ll still have RichardRoeper.com, where we can see Roeper talk about movies and occasionally say naughty words. Additionally, Ebert says he’s working on a new show called Roger Ebert presents At the Movies, which will feature the return of thumbs. Let’s hope so.

Spring Has Sprung

Figured I’d post with the off chance that we’ll be taking a break for awhile. Spring Break has more less begun, though I’m still finishing some of my last projects. Gonna try and work on a new Morgue episode this break and it looks like Nancy’s already trying to whip the team into shape for Summer Softball. I wouldn’t imagine much going on here unless we go and see some movies like Hot Tub Time Machine, which I really hope is good but sounds like it could go either way. So were just enjoying the off and on nice weather and chillaxin’ (however that’s supposedly spelled) catch you on the flipside.
