John’s Top Five Horror Films of 2012

Bad horror movies are a dime a dozen, but if you look carefully I think you’ll find there’s a lot to like in today’s scene. Foreign and independent films are a good place to start. Sometimes you can even luck out when a mainstream movie is actually released to good reviews. As a matter of fact, I didn’t even get around to seeing some of the best reviewed horror-related films of the year. Paranorman and Frankenweenie (my theater had technical difficulties) were two that I sorely missed. Fortunately, I still managed to put together a tight top five for this year’s Shocktober.

Top 10 Episodes of Batman: The Animated Series

Batman the Animated Series was a landmark in animated television. Not only because of its dark decor animation, but for its hardboiled plotlines and complex characters. This is a show that premiered on Primetime. How many non-sitcom animated shows can claim such a feat? This is the show that gave the world Harley Quinn, Mark Hamill’s Joker, and turned throwaway villains such as Mr. Freeze and Clayface into fan favorites.

As good as any live-action “adult” drama of the time BTAS excels with mature storylines and unflinching action. It’s a show that meant a great deal to many of us that grew up in the 90s, and will continue to captivate generations as the best incarnation of the Caped Crusader. With that being said I present my favorite episodes.

Top 10 Songs The Beatles Gave Away

Happy 70th birthday Paul McCartney! In honor of Sir Paul’s special day, here’s a post about his and his mate’s prolific songwriting careers. You may know the hits but what about the songs The Beatles gave away? You have to remember that there was a time where that Lennon-McCartney signature meant instant hit status and everybody wanted a piece of that Fab Four gold. Sean’s Top 10 Movies of 2011

Something changed me this afternoon. After feeling like I hadn’t seen “enough” movies from last year, like I wasn’t worthy of an opinion on the medium for 2011, I reread Colin’s top 10. And, having gotten past the weirdness that is Colin’s choice not to write about movies he likes, something stood out to me. He saw 32 movies last year. I saw 30. We had taken different paths, but we had gotten to basically the same destination. Now, sure, Colin saw a lot more critical darlings than I did, and I’m sure John blows both of us completely out of the water, but at least I got to have a little swim first.

Colin’s Top 10 Movies of 2011

For me 2011 seemed like a pretty solid year for movies, not spectacular or anything, but solid.  It does seem like the harder-to-see indie films continue to be generally more impressive while the big budget films appear to be getting dumber and lazier.  Yet at the same time, I found many of the more heralded indie films to be a bit overhyped, so my list for the most part falls somewhere in to that middle ground between the indies and the studio pictures.  Saw 32 movies this year, by the way.

John’s Top 10 Movies of 2011

Every year I try to see all the movies I can and I’m still never ready for this list. I think I’ve done a good job seeing most of the year’s critically lauded films. My only regrets for 2011 is that I didn’t see Shame, Take Shelter, or the last Harry Potter, though that last one was just because of my own laziness. All that aside as long as I can settle on ten films I like I’m happy so here they are.
