Good Movie/Bad Movie: Ghosts in the Shells

What is The Matrix? We know the answer to that question now, but do you know its real source? One of the Wachowskis’ biggest inspirations was a 1995 film called Ghost in the Shell, one of the first anime movies to find success in the United States. Tragically, now that movie risks being lumped in with a bunch of half-cooked Scarlett Johansson sci fi action flicks, like Lucy, The Island, or We Bought a Zoo, thanks to a modern, live action remake. But maybe the remake, despite all the controversy surrounding it, isn’t that bad? Maybe the original isn’t that good? Let’s find out this week, on Good Movie/Bad Movie!

Good Movie/Bad Movie: Suicide Missions

What would it take for you to risk it all? Would you gamble with your life for riches? To save a loved one? Maybe you’d only do it if you had nothing else to lose? This week on GMBM, we talk about two films that present two very different groups that go on suicide missions. One is the band of down-on-their-luck losers in 1977’s Sorcerer, a forgotten classic. The other is the band of goofy misfits from 2016’s Suicide Squad, the third critical failure in a row from DC’s Extended Universe. Check this pod to find out which one we loved and which we hated!

Good Movie/Bad Movie: To Good Eyesight and a Head Full of Hair

Fifty years of trekking across the stars and we’ve received five televisions shows, thirteen movies, and still more to come. What a long strange trip it’s been. This week, Capt. Sean Lemme, Mr. John and Dr. Nancy review Star Trek: Beyond and search for life in the black hole that is 1984’s Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Will they complete their mission? Listen and find out.

Good Movie/Bad Movie: The Cross-Country Run

If you had been foolish enough to buy The Cannonball Run on DVD, you’d want to make something of it too. But you’re not that foolish, are you? No, you’re a smart, savvy Internet browser/podcast listener/sex machine. Look at you, you emblem of perfection. You pillar of the community. We should be thanking you, for giving your time to listen to us basically describe the plot of a dumb movie. All hail the listener, lord of the airwaves!

Good Movie/Bad Movie: Dredd

This week we play judge, jury, and executioner for the two Judge Dredd movies that have been made thus far. The first, starring Sylvester Stalone, tries to be the ultimate story for the character, full of massive reveals and incredible consequences for the rest of the franchise. The second, starring Mildly Pleasedman Karl Urban, is a day-in-the-life adventure that thrives on atmosphere and style. Which approach is right? Which approach is wrong? Because one must be good and one must be bad. How will the movies plead? I knew you’d say that.

Good Movie/Bad Movie: Bromances

Another week, another episode of something that’s not Top Ten Thursdays. This week, join Colin and I as we compare another two movies with very little in common in another episode of Good Movie/Bad Movie. Our focus this time? The summer action showcase that is Fast and Furious 6, and the significantly more down-to-earth indie darling Frances Ha. Can you guess which one is the good movie and which one is the bad movie? If I told you now, it would ruin the purpose of the show.

Edit: I fixed a few weird audio moments, if you haven’t listened to this episode yet, I recommend a re-download. If you have, NBD.

Good Movie/Bad Movie: Drilling

And now for something completely different. With half of us scattering across the country, it seemed difficult and impractical to put together a whole show this week. But we didn’t want to leave you good people without anything this week, so we put together a special little show. With P.T. Anderson’s new film The Master out this week, we wanted an excuse to take a look back at the director’s last work: There Will Be Blood. So we watched it and invented a new feature were we compare two movies that have something in common to determine which one is the good movie, and which one the bad. This first time, it’s not really a shocker, as the other film is 2003’s The Core, which… I don’t want to write anything about The Core. Just listen.
