The Eighth Annual Criterion Month Draft

It’s that time of year again! Well, sort of. This year we’re pushing our annual Criterion Month back a month due to summer travel plans, which will perhaps give us time to buy some of the blu rays on sale at Barnes & Noble’s July Criterion Sale? Who knows, but one thing we do know is that we’ve stuck to the same format of picking our movies to review each year. We each take turns selecting our films over the course of a podcast and then struggle to describe what these movies are about. But that’s ok! We haven’t seen them yet, but luckily a sense of discovery will prevail during the ensuing month as we find out why these films are deserving of being in the Collection. Continue reading

The Seventh Annual Criterion Month Draft

It’s that time of year again, when we take a break from the many blockbusters crowding our theaters and take a look back at cinema’s past and all of its various artistic triumphs and oddities. This year, Sean tries to power through some of his Criterion box sets, John picks some Tarantino favs as well as horror-adjacent curiosities, and I just try to remember what old movies I’ve seen before. This is always one of the more fun podcasts we do each year, and this one is no exception. We’ll see you in Criterion Month! Continue reading

The Sixth Annual Criterion Month Draft

With July less than two weeks away, it’s about time we draft our picks for Criterion Month once again. This is the annual podcast where the three of us take turns picking what movies from the Criterion Collection we’d like to review on this blog over the course of next month. Most years there aren’t a ton of stolen picks, and sorry to disappoint you, that is once again the case this year. That said, we all had a lot of fun talking about revered movies we haven’t seen yet but are excited to talk about in 30(ish) days of somewhat rushed reviews that are published just in time before the stroke of midnight. Continue reading

The 5th Annual Criterion Month Draft

And we’re back with our first podcast in quite some time! Just as the NFL draft happens each Spring, a far more important draft also happens this time each year, where we pick what movies we’ll be reviewing for Criterion Month. Like every year, it’s an odd exercise in talking about movies we haven’t seen yet while there isn’t much competition as to whether one of us will steal each other’s pick. Still, the boys find plenty of arty movies to look forward to seeing in a summer that should actually see the return of theater moviegoing and possibly a newfound appreciation for this medium that we already know and love. Continue reading

The 4th Annual Criterion Draft

Just as John wraps up talking about his favorite horror movies of the 2010s, we take a trip to the more distant past by making our Criterion Picks. As you may or may not know, each July we at Mildly Pleased review 30-ish movies from the Criterion Collection on the blog, and while many things may be different about this Summer in the world at large, this tradition remains essentially the same. This year, Colin and John stick to past themes of spreading their picks throughout the decades of films, while Sean commits himself to reviewing nothing but black and African-American filmmakers this year.

Unlike in years past, we recorded our draft just a week before Criterion Month starts, so look forward to some reviews already comin’ at ya tomorrow! Continue reading

The Third Annual Mildly Pleased Criterion Draft

As we find ourselves in the midst of Avengers: Endgame and the NFL Draft – two celebrations of grown men pummeling each other – we thought we’d class things up a bit. On this podcast, we offer our very own draft pertaining to the films each of us will review during the Criterion Month of July. Much like past years, John sticks to a theme, Sean tries to see some of The Greatest Movies of All Time™, and Colin just befuddles everyone with movies no one’s heard of. Be sure to check back in July when we get this Criterion train a-rollin’! Continue reading

Shocktober 2018 Draft

It may be another year, another Shocktober. But this year we decided to do something different, by recording a draft of our picks for this year’s monthlong ode to horror movies. Granted, it’s not that new, since this is just the same thing we do to divvy out our Criterion month picks. But nonetheless, here’s a fun little thing to listen to while waiting for the most spookiest of seasons to begin. See you in Shocktober! Continue reading
