Sean’s Top 10 TV Shows of 2019

Man, I really need to watch Succession, huh? 2019 was the end of the decade and it felt like it everything I loved had to end with it. In the last year, I said goodbye to the likes of Steven Universe, Broad City, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Catastrophe, Veep, Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas, The Tick, Jessica Jones (and all Marvel Netflix), Game of Thrones, Fleabag, Legion, Bajillion Dollar Propertie$, Silicon Valley, and Mr. Robot. That list doesn’t even include shows that are returning for brief final stretches this year, like Bojack Horseman and The Good Place. So yeah, that Succession is looking pretty good.

Colin’s Top Ten TV Shows of 2018

This was undoubtedly the year-end list I was dreading having to write the most. I was simply checked out on a lot of TV this year. I keep questioning whether “Peak TV” and “A Golden Age of Television” is necessarily the same thing. Sure, there’s a lot of TV out there, but I don’t know. There’s only a handful of TV shows out there that impact me as much as, say the best 15 or so movies in a given year. Still, there seemed to be plenty of memorable TV to come out this year, and I probably watched only a small fraction of it. Continue reading →

John’s Top Ten TV Shows of 2018

I don’t know how many Top Ten TV posts I’ve written that dropped the phrase the “Golden Age of Television” but I’m going to keep doing it until it feels wrong. An issue with this outlook is it makes it hard to write a new intro to every year’s list. What can I say about the landscape that I didn’t say last year or the year before that? How about a shoutout to the quality of shows over a wide variety of platforms? I have shows on my list from Netflix, Adult Swim, AMC, Amazon Prime, HBO, FX, Cinemax. That’s right CINEMAX. When I was a kid Cinemax was the porn channel. Now they have a show from the King of the Hill guy. Who knows where next year’s best shows will come from. Penthouse TV? Only time will tell.

Sean’s Top 10 TV Shows of 2018

Doing these annual lists has definitely screwed up my media consumption habits. Late November through mid January has become a mad sprint, where I re-interrogate all the albums I enjoyed, catch up with the Oscar bait/indie/foreign films that are hard to see in the warmer months, and finish up a few massive games so I can feel good about writing about them. The one department in exception is my favorite shows, where, since I diligently keep up-to-date, my list is pretty much set months in advance. So the most consistently reliable entertainment medium for me becomes the one I’m least excited to write about. To help me get over that humdrum attitude, this year I’m going to try to passionately pitch these shows to you, instead of just writing about why I like them. Is that really that different? Who’s That Girl?

New Girl is a show that I’ve consistently found myself being surprised by, despite the fact that I’ve never had particularly high expectations for it. After all, the show’s premise was as basic as sitcom premises get – a newly single girl moves in with a bunch of single dudes and they like, get into hijinks and stuff. Yet the basic-ness of that premise is what allowed its writers the freedom to go in so many delightful directions. And in the process made me keep watching in an era where it’s become increasingly hard to stick with a show for more than the first three seasons or so. Continue reading →

Colin’s Top 10 TV Shows of 2017

I’ll be honest, my enthusiasm for TV definitely started to wane a bit this past year. Which isn’t to say I watched any less TV than the past few years. In fact, looking at the amount of shows I watched last year and the year before, I watched as much TV as I ever have. And yet, TV just didn’t seem to mean as much in 2017. Maybe you can blame that on the fact that there is so god damn much TV out there now, so it somewhat cheapens quality television. Or maybe its because there was lot of good TV last year, but not a ton of great TV. But, that said, a lot of good TV is nothing to complain about, and here’s the goodest of the good. John’s Top Ten TV Shows of 2017

TOO. MANY. SHOWS! I had to marathon multiple shows just today to finish this list. It’s getting to the point where I feel bad for skipping out on shows like The Good Place or falling behind on Better Call Saul, both shows I know I would and do like. But the TV landscape has turned into some kind of entertainment-based shark. Which means if you don’t stop swimming you’ll get left in its bloody wake. Let’s do this!
