Mockbusted

Ever walk into a video store browse around and find a movie that appears to be a blatant rip-off of another more popular movie? Some B-movie that attempts to attract attention with a familiar premise and title? Does a little movie called Transmorphers ring a bell?

These films are called “Mockbusters.” Which are essentially low budget b-movies created to piggy-back on the publicity of more popular films. Sounds ridiculous right? Well recently I found there’s an independent production company called “The Asylum” that’s soul purpose is to make these kind of films. Can you believe someone would start a company with such an unimaginative and underhanded goal? I don’t agree with what these douchebags do but on the other hand they have provided us with some hilariously named pieces of shlock. I haven’t seen any of them but I figured it might be good for a laugh to share some of these memorable titles… So that we can learn from them or something.


5. AVP: Alien Vs. Predator – AVH: Alien Vs. Hunter
If the title isn’t already similar enough just look at that poster. Could they look anymore like Alien and Predator? This is a definite case of fooling someone into renting the wrong movie.


4. Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – Allan Quatermain and the Temple of Skulls
: At least Indy has name recognition, who’s this guy? Allan Quatermain? It’s not even a particularly memorable name so why do I care?


3. The Day the Earth Stood Still – The Day the Earth Stopped
: What’s funny about this is the fact that The Day the Earth Stood Still isn’t literally about the Earth standing still. So now the Earth is stopping? Looks to more or less like another invasion movie (in this case with robots) but then why give it that title? If it’s not about the same thing why even bother?


2. Terminator Salvation – The Terminators
I can’t believe this one is just different enough to avoid being sued. All they did was make it plural, they didn’t even care to stray from the look of the Terminator robots. I don’t know how much more of this I can take.


1. Transformers – Transmorphers
: My personal favorite due solely to that ridiculous title. So let’s break it down for a second “Trans” means to change and “Form” is the shape and structure of an object so “Transformer” makes sense. “Morph” actually means “to transform” so saying “Transmorph” is basically saying “Change-Transform” it doesn’t make any sense. Upon further reading I can’t even find out if these robots actually transform at all. According to Wikipedia it’s about aliens piloting robots trying to destroy the planet. The whole thing is beyond ridiculous but what’s even more perplexing is that “Sy Fy” channel is showing the film’s sequel Transmorphers: Fall of Man on TV… Eww I feel so unclean.

And the list goes on. Another one of my favorites was Sunday School Musical which is exactly what it sounds like. It’s not that these titles are really that hilarious but the fact that these people are so desperate to make a quick buck really boggles the mind. I can only dream about what titles are on the horizon. Sounds like they’re due for a Harry Potter knockoff.
