It’s That Time of the Year Again

The time of the year that brings people together. Men and women all over the world are smiling at each other and maybe, just maybe, a young love is finally blooming. And what wonderful timing for this holiday! The Olympics are in full swing and for just a little while, the whole planet is locked in friendly competition up on the scenic, slightly snowy hills of Vancouver. A wonderful day indeed. Yes, in case you’ve forgotten, today is the Korean New Year.

Korea is a special place in America’s hearts. There’s the delightful South Korea, where they made surprising cars and eat live octopus. Oh, those amazing people. And then there’s North Korea, the kingdom of Kim Jong-il. That guy! He’s so insane. Of course, there are plenty of Korean people in other countries too, and I’m sure they’re having a great time today as well.

But there’s another holiday today too. One you might have forgotten about. That’s right, Tết, the Vietnamese new year. Hooray! It’s also Losar, the Tibetan new year. If you didn’t know that, I bet you feel like a real losar. And it’s Tsagaan Sar, the Mongolian new year. Boy, there sure are a lot of new year’s today for being halfway through the second month of 2010. But there’s even more! Today is also the Chinese new year! I bet Jackie Chan’s having a great time not having to think about the poor direction his career’s going in today.

Seriously though, you guys must be furiously beating on your desks and yelling at the screen, “Sean! You’re forgetting the most important holiday!” To which I would reply, oh yeah, the Feast of St. Brigid of Kildare. But that’s a little religious, you know? I mean, I don’t know much about this feast, but the last thing I’d want to do was talk about some relatively obscure religious figure that’s probably been exploited by card companies to force people to be additionally sentimental one day a year. That would be weird.

Just go out there and have some fun. Share some good times with whoever’s special in your life. And if you run into any Korean people, make sure to greet them with a friendly “annyong.”
