T3 84: Top 10 Movies of 2014

There’s something really tricky about top 10 lists. When you don’t have a list at all, when you just have to name a movie your favorite of the year, it’s actually not that bad. It seems like it would be, but usually there’s just one movie that you truly, truly want to stand up for. And top fives, well, top fives are great. Again, it’s never too hard to choose five movies that you think are especially worth noting. But a top 10, that’s hard. There’s something so damning about not making your top 10, so finite about that cutoff. And worse, when it gets to the back few spots, it’s almost always the case that the movie you would put at something like number 14 could just as easily have been your seven. It’s really hard, especially if you’re trying to be funny and a little insightful along the way. Let us show you just how difficult it is on this week’s podcast.

The Third Annual Mildly Pleased Awards

Hey, wow, did you see those album lists we did? Well, expect more where that came from. A lot more. Well, wait. Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself. After all, our sort-of slogan is “Lower your expectations.” And you know, sometimes I forget to do that. Every year I find myself getting crushed because I’m disappointed the latest big budget action movie isn’t the next Citizen Kane or the new Jack White album isn’t simultaneously a return to White Stripes form while an invention of something provocative and genre-defying. Sometimes stuff’s just stuff, and I’ve got to deal with it. And that’s what the Mildly Pleased Awards are all about.

Join us as we discuss the most acceptable stuff of 2014. The video games, TV shows, albums, movies and more that are flawed, but not irredeemable. And I mean, aren’t we all? Maybe it’s time we stop chasing some delusion of perfection and start looking for the beauty within the mundane. Because life’s too short and too sad to not at least laugh at how nuts Russel Crowe gets in Noah.

T3 81: Top 10 Fall Songs

As you can tell from the Shocktober posts which surround this one, fall is here. You might not have thought much about it, since the season doesn’t get enough love. No one wants Autumn to come because that means the summer has to end, and then once it’s here everyone wants to skip through it to get to winter and that wonderful Christmastime. This week’s podcast is for anyone who can recognize all the fun that September, October, and November can be. I’m talking about the new school year. I’m talking about the release of most of the good movies and video games for the year. I’m talking about Halloween. I’m talking about Thanksgiving. I’m talking about Black Friday… Wait never mind, Black Friday sucks.

T3 80: Top 10 Robin Williams Performances

The sudden and tragic death of Robin Williams seemed to hit the entire world pretty hard. Harder than most celebrity deaths. Part of that may be because the circumstances of his demise stand in such stark contrast to the kind of person we all wanted to believe he was. But I’d like to think it was mostly because he was one of the hardest working entertainers that ever lived and probably the only person who will ever live who could justifiably be criticized for telling too many jokes too fast. He’s someone who many of us associate closely with our childhoods, and it’s hard to let him go. And the great thing is we don’t have to; Robin Williams left behind a vast library of movies as his legacy. This week, join us as we reflect on our favorites.

T3 79: Bottom 10 Disaster Movies

Did you guys see Louie this week? I guess it was something we knew was coming, but can you believe, just conceptually, that a show about a comedian living in New York would ever get to the point of showing a harrowing hurricane rescue? That’s a pretty special show, and we’re all lucky to be able to enjoy it. But don’t get it twisted, we paid our dues. We paid by having to sit through some of the worst disaster movies ever made, all so we could make a list. Sometimes we even overpaid, I’m looking at you Michael Bay.
