The Fifth Annual Mildly Pleased Awards

If you’re being honest, do all the non-Oscars movie awards shows matter to you? Do you care about the various guilds’ picks? What about lists from critics, newspapers, and blogs? Certainly you don’t care about the Golden Globes, right? Not really, at least, because all those people are going to be talking about the same 10 or so movies which are undeniably great. And that’s true, to a lesser extent, in pretty much every medium.

That is why, for five years now, the Mildly Pleased Awards have celebrated the “good, not great” works that would otherwise go forgotten. After all, everyone one of us just lived through a whole 365 days of 2016. If we were to just talk about the 10 good days, it wouldn’t really do the year justice, would it? So join us as we count down the most OK video games, music, TV, and film from the last year. Oh, and hit the jump to check out our viral video nominees… They’re fine!

T3 100: A Farewell to Lists

The original idea for Top Ten Thursdays was a simple solution to two problems: one, writing T3 posts on the blog was a contentious, time-consuming affair and two, Da Podcasket was a meandering, directionless mess. So doing a podcast where we made lists seemed to be the perfect solution – it would be easier to jot down nominees and talk about them as a group than to try to do the whole thing solo written, and our podcast would have an actual hook to get people interested. But as our professional lives became more busy and we invented other types of shows that better complimented our strengths, Top Ten Thursdays became something of a black sheep – or perhaps even an albatross keeping us from podcasting.

So we decided it was time to retire the old girl. But we couldn’t do that without a proper send-off, which is what you have here as episode 100 (give or take a few). Join us as we reminisce over some of our favorite moments while trying to track the history of the show over its four and a half year run. You know we did this one right: little to no research, one long take, plenty of jokes we’ll regret later. It’s the end of T3, Judgement Day is finally here! The machines will rise!

Top Stuff of 2016 So Far

Hey buddy! Just wanted you to know that even though we are on the cusp of a post-T3 world, that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop doing the big, easy best of the year lists (for at least as long as we keep doing these irregular podcasts). That includes the top stuff of the year so far podcast as well, one of the shows that least well fit the T3 format in which we discuss an arbitrary number of video games, albums, TV shows, and movies that have been abnormally good during the first half of the year. Which ends today! It’s June 30! July starts tomorrow! We’re halfway there, living on a prayer!

T3 99: Top 10 Tabletop Games

Sometimes, it’s pretty obvious when our podcast would be controversial if we had a large audience. So go easy on us this time, OK? For us, board games are an activity, a socializing tool, a means of joke creation. It’s not our lifestyle. I can’t even convince the others to play Hearthstone, you really think I can get them into Dominion, Carcassone, or the even deeper games that I haven’t even tried? So instead, try to enjoy the conversation, as this is far, far from the definitive list of the greatest tabletop games.

T3 98: Top 10 Anticipated Movies of 2016

I like to look at these anticipated movie lists as reminders that we’re not trying to hate movies. That we’re not prejudging anything, that we want to give movies like Chappie a shot. Except for Colin, who decided his role in these would be to point out the most dreadful movies a given year has coming for it. What would Colin’s most anticipated movie list look like? One can only imagine, but it probably wouldn’t fall exactly in the middle of my mainstream tastes and John’s hip, creative inclinations.

T3 97: Top 10 Movies of 2015

The best movies of last year are here and ready to party! Yeah, whether it’s grueling physical suffering in the name of brutal revenge, the world turning into a monotone hellhole, or some good old-fashioned destruction of the American economy, no one can deny 2015 sure was a blast. What’s that? You want to hear us talk about a movie in which journalists hopelessly battle against the Catholic church’s institutional abuse of children? We’ve got that! A woman and her child forced to live in a box smaller than most people’s bedroom for years? We’ve got that too! The reality that the one thing the futile war on drugs can accomplish is turning idealists into cynics? No, Sicario didn’t make anyone’s list, we don’t have that. But check out the podcast, it’s a lot of fun.

T3 96: Top 10 TV Shows of 2015

Funnily enough, even though all three of us wrote about being totally overwhelmed by the increasing quantity of quality TV shows last year, our three lists weren’t that different. Between John, Colin, and myself, less than 20 shows were honored with top 10 spots. Maybe it’s not surprising that three guys who have been friends almost their entire lives have similar tastes, but it’s a shame great shows like Veep and Inside Amy Schumer didn’t even get to be part of the conversation. What conversation? Why our overall top 10, silly. Take a listen!
